Status of Catering education

Recently I had been to a couple of catering colleges near Chennai. In fact, I was delighted to visit these colleges, as I always used to feel whenever, I visited the students. However, I was disappointed at the sorry state of affairs. It was more the indifference and attitude that the staff had towards grooming the students.

While it is true, that colleges are no longer in a situation to refuse admission to anyone seeking the same, could they not take enough steps to groom those students to the expected industry standards?

And what does industry expect? Decent English and good attitude. That's all. There is a wide gap between students' aspirations, industry expectation and faculty responsibility.

As consultants, we are trying to bridge the student - industry gap. Hope we succeed to some extent.

Please be informed that all colleges are not the same.Yes some colleges are in very bad shape becuase of thier commercial interests and with no professional or ethical commitments. But at the same time there are some very good colleges in India which are recognised internationally.Look at Culinary Acdemy of India,Hyderabad. It has been listed in the Top Ten Global Culinary Institutes in the World by Asia Correspondant which itself speaks for the quality and commitment.

Also one needs to understand that colleges which are not able to generate quality among the students will automatically fade away with time.
